    You may hear the word 'Posturepedic' floating around when you are shopping for a new mattress – but what does this term mean and what sets it apart from any other mattress?

    In this article, we will take a closer look at the main components of a Sealy Posturepedic, so you can better understand what these types of mattresses have to offer.

    Where does the word ‘Posturepedic’ come from?

    The word 'Posturepedic' is a contraction of the words posture – the position in which a person holds their body – and Orthopaedic – the medically correct position of skeletal and associated structures of the body.

     
    Sealy Posturepedic is the culmination of continuous research and ongoing development of sleep systems, and their interaction with the human body. When you lie on a Posturepedic mattress, it’s more than just springs, foam and fabric.
     

    What is a Posturepedic mattress?

    A Posturepedic mattress is made with three parts in mind: support, comfort and durability. Getting the right balance of these three areas is essential.

    Support

    While you might assume that every mattress is supportive, we know based on our testing that not all mattresses are created equal.

    The Sealy Posturepedic range has been designed upon a history of orthopedically correct support to help provide the right amount of posture support for your needs. 

    Here’s how it works:

    • The body needs to be correctly supported to allow the muscles to relax
    • Relief of pressure points minimise the body’s need to toss and turn during sleep
    • Orthopaedically correct design is the balanced combination of these two elements

    From a support perspective, Sealy have invested a lot of research and development into the Open Coil Technology, which is central to the Posturepedic support system.

    Different springs provide different support. The springs inside a Posturepedic mattress are what's known as inner spring coils. Made of titanium alloy, these metal springs are light but very strong, and provide the deep support based on the criteria developed by the orthopaedic surgeons who designed the first Posturepedic mattress so many years ago.

    Inherently, the Posturepedic support system is a transfer of motion; the mattress senses your body weight and motion, and responds with the right amount of support needed. 

    By choosing a supportive mattress and combining this with the optimal sleeping position, you will increase the probability of getting a better quality sleep every night. 

     

    We are the spring mattress people. We have our own spring factory, and we do a lot of research and development to make the spring. The spring is central to our support system. It is what makes us different to the others.

    Comfort

    While support is provided by the infrastructure system of the mattress, this will not ensure proper posture alone.

    At Sealy, we’ve developed an understanding of foam, and how to build a better bed.

    In essence, mattress comfort comes from its foam layers. But building a great mattress isn’t just about stacking a bunch of foam together; you need to make sure all the layers work together in combination, in order to create the right mattress “feel” ranging from soft, to medium, to firm. There are architectural principles and designs that are established to ensure all of the layers work together harmoniously, and continue to do so over time. 

    The comfort layers of a Posturepedic are made of a mixture of memory foam and gel-infused visco, which provide extra cushioning, allowing you to “sink into” your mattress a bit more.

    Having the right layers in place will also help to dissipate the pressure and relieve any soreness. For example, if you sleep on your side, there will be pressure on your hip and shoulder at the points which come in contact with the mattress. Comfort increases conformance which helps to ensure you get into a neutral sleeping position.

    You can quite easily just put a bunch of foam together and make a mattress. But you need to make sure all the layers work together.

    Durability

    The last component isn’t so much about mattress functionality, but rather its longevity; while foam forms the comfort layer of the mattress, we still need to make sure that it is durable.

    A common problem with mattresses is that they begin to sag and deteriorate over time, which can be detrimental to your health. Furthermore, they can simply become uncomfortable which keeps you tossing and turning at night.

    At Sealy we do quality testing each month on a variety of components in a NATA accredited facility.

    Our giant foam database means that we can narrow down where any problem areas are and address them at the source. We test for density, fatigue and durability. This data is then analysed and we look for any trends.

     

    Our testing is actual numbers extrapolated from the machine and assessed, and we do this every month on every single foam product that we use. That’s our durability test.
